At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
