Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
