Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
